The Bit at the Beginning

Hi! My name is Paul and this website is about me and my continuing travels around the world (mostly Asia, 'cos that's where I live, now). I just want to say that I do not appologise for the terrible photography, commentary and shameless way that I publish photographs about myself all over the web site. I wrote this web site mainly to allow my family to see what I get up to on my exploits around the globe. I haven't been home to England in about 9 years and so this is the best way to let everyone back home see what I'm up to. But if you do happen to find anything useful on the site, well that's cool too. You'll also see advertisements scattered about the web site 'cos I need to fund the travels somehow; I'm not allowed to encourage anyone to click on them, so I won't.

Although I've done a fair bit of traveling, I've never been much of a photographer, or writer for that matter, which is why I don't always have great photos of the places I've been to. In fact, I just bought myself a digital camera; I thought if I'm gonna be doing a lot of traveling, I might as well get one and set up a web site. When I don't have photos of places I've been to, I've borrowed from friends or stolen them from somewhere else. I have given credit to the photographer wherever I have used other peoples photographs. In particular, I have used a lot of Richard's photos. Richard is a good mate of mine from New Zealand. He has his own web site - insanitywetrust.com Richard takes some really nice photos, you might wanna visit his web site and take a look.

The Bit in the Middle

Hong Kong

This is a picture of the famous Star Ferry which runs between Hong Kong island and Kowloon. I've been to Hong Kong over 40 times now and still counting(I started to count the stamps in my passport, I got bored when I got to 37 and I still have 2 old passports full of stamps that I haven't checked yet). I have to be honest Hong Kong isn't my most favorite place, and I usually only stay there a few hours. I have my Hong Kong frequent visitor pass, so on arrival, I fly through Immigration without having to queue up, jump on the Airport Express train and head to Hong Kong island. After a bit of shopping, for those little luxuries I can't buy In Taiwan(that's where I live now) it's back on the Airport Express, back on a plane and I'm outta there.

United States

You don't need me to tell you where this is. I was in the United States around 1990. I Stood on the top of the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center and in the Crown of the Statue of Liberty. I love New York City, It's a fantastic place, although at that time it was also pretty seedy and quite dangerous(although all that's changed, I hear). I stayed on Times Square which cost about US$200 a night for a hotel room(much more expensive these days). When I was in the USA I also went to Los Angeles, Orlando, and Key West (Yeah I know, a regular tourist.)

Cambodia - Siem Reap - Angkor Wat

I traveled to Seam Reap in Cambodia just recently. For those who don't know Seam Reap is home to Angkor Wat. Seam Reap is a fast and upcoming tourist destination with scores of new 5 star hotels being built all the way from the airport into town. Apart from the obvious reason for going to Seam Reap(Angkor Wat) ie. to see Angkor Wat and the other temples, there's a bustling night life emerging, including some reasonable places to eat.

I have just been back to Cambodia 06/10/2005 - 10/10/2005 This time I stayed in Phnom Penh where I got to visit the Killing Fields, Tuol Sleng (concentration camp), The Royal Palace, The National Museum, the Independence Monument, and the Russian Market, and many more. I got to shoot guns and a rocket launcher and had a great time around Phnom Penh's nightlife. Check out the links for more...

Taipei - Taiwan

Taiwan is the place I call home these days. I'm not a big city boy anymore, and so I don't actually live in Taipei, but I took a trip here a couple of weeks ago, with a few friends, to see Taipei 101. The elevators in this place are the fastest in the world and believe me it's like watching something from a science fiction movie as the numbers on the floor counter whizz past. It's just over 30 seconds to the top. I plan on putting together quite an extensive section on Taiwan, after all I've lived here over 13 years; I speak Chinese; most of my friends have been here for years, also; I think between us we should be able to knock something together.

Seoul - South Korea

I was a little dissapointed with South Korea, but that was probably my own fault; I should have gone to see the main attraction: The DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). I intended to, but I just didn't make it. In my own defense I was only there for a few days, and apparently they don't do tours on a Monday. I did, however, make it to the top of the Seoul Tower, pictured here.

Bali - Indonesia

You may not recognize this one. Instead of putting a picture of beautiful beaches for which this place is famous, I decided to put up this picture; it is if course a picture of the Bali Bombing Memorial, a tragic event which killed 202 people from 23 countries. I was there on the second aniversary of the bombing and met people who were actualy there on the night the bombs went off. I've been to Bali a couple of times.

Vietnam

Ah! managed to get myself on the front page. Couldn't find any good pictures of Vietnam, so here's one of me crawling through the tunnels of Cu Chi. These are the original tunnels, albeit with a couple of light bulbs added. It's still pretty dark and claustophobic. I'm actually in pitch blackness here, I just have a great flash on my camera.

Phuket - Thailand

Here I am again. Well it is my website! This photo was taken at the shooting range in Phuket just a few months before the sunami struck. I was staying in a hotel right on the beach front, which was basically wiped out. I haven't included any pictures of the beach or pubs and clubs on the front because I have no idea if they still exist or not.

Philippines

I've been to the Philippines lots of times (still gotta count the stamps in the passports), and do I have some stories to tell you: from sun soaked beaches, scuba diving from deserted islands, to whole towns full of girlie bars left over from the USA millitary era, the Philippines has it all. This is a picture of a jeepney, the preferred method of transport in the Philippines. I once took a 3 hour ride over a dirt track road through the mountains in one of these. There were about 25 to 30 people inside and another 20 on the roof; you have to do it to believe it. But that's nothing compared to the 9 hour boat ride I took...
